theo van gogh was the one who suggested that his older brother vincent start seriously painting. as soon as theo was gainfully employed he gave vincent around 15% of his own yearly salary for art supplies, lodging, and food. about 2/3rds of vincent’s surviving letters were to theo (including vincent’s earliest and last letters), all of which were found stored in theo’s desk. theo’s child, vincent willem, was born on january 31st, 1890, and vincent was so delighted by his nephew that he painted almond blossoms for him. vincent shot himself half a year later on july 29th, 1890. theo’s distress at his brother’s death worsened his syphilis symptoms and he died half a year after his brother on january 25th, 1891 (four days before vincent willem’s first birthday). theo was reburied next to vincent in auvers-sur-oise at the request of theo’s wife johanna.

And that love lived on Theo’s wife, Johanna, who was the one who pushed for the preservation of Vincent’s paintings. Johanna who made sure that her husband’s beloved brother would not be forgotten. Johanna who fought tooth and nail so that Theo and Vincent would never be forgotten. Johanna who carried the family legacy, who made sure that the works of Vincent would be kept in her possession. And then Vincent Willem, named for a uncle so loved, carried this legacy and founded the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam.

The van Gogh family history is deeply interwoven with love. It was the love of a brother that gave a young man the courage to paint and the resources to do so. It was the love of a woman for her husband and her husband’s beloved brother that made that story known. And it was the love of a nephew, who was so deeply loved even if for such a short time, that made it possible for the world to know Vincent van Gogh.

please read this story of a man accidentally discovering his wife is the world’s best Tetris player

[image description: an excerpt of text that says:

“It’s funny,” I told Flewin. “We have an old Nintendo Game Boy floating around the house, and Tetris is the only game we own. My wife will sometimes dig it out to play on airplanes and long car rides. She’s weirdly good at it. She can get 500 or 600 lines, no problem.”

What Flewin said next I will never forget.

“Oh, my!”

/end id]

TL;DR on the article

The husband was writing an article on classic video game records, was surprised to find out that holding the Tetris record is a bit of a big deal, and mentions how good his wife is at it.

The guy he’s talking to mentions that the record is 327, way lower than his wifes usual scores of 500-600.

They travel to a tournament, and she goes to do her attempt. Just after she beats 327, and is climbing higher, a judge brings up to the husband that the specific version she’s playing actually has a different record of 545.

She overhears that she needs to beat 500-something, and keeps going, setting the record at 841.

Never let your enemy tell you how many of you there are. Never let the man that you’re against form your opinions. This is the trick that’s played on everyone who’s oppressed: when you have a revolution in a country, the first thing you take over is the radio. Then, you start telling the people that the war is over, so all of them surrender. They believe that thing right there.

And once they take that over, they start telling you where you are and where they are, and you fall right in line — it’s plain thought control.

The majority of the American people aren’t segregationists. The majority of the American people aren’t imperialists. But the government is. The structure is; the power faction is. So, how, then, do all the majority go along with it?

Because those who sit in power over the television, over the radio, and over the press are constantly telling those who are the masses how free they are, how this they are, and how that they are.”

This is the Captain America we need in 2017.

Let’s hear Cap’s entire speech:

“Listen to me– all of you out there! You were told by this man– your hero– that America is the greatest country in the world! He told you that Americans were the greatest people– that America could be refined like silver, could have the impurities hammered out of it, and shine more brightly! He went on about how precious America was – how you needed to make sure it remained great! And he told you anything was justified to preserve that great treasure, that pearl of great price that is America!

“Well, I say America is nothing! Without its ideals– its commitment to the freedom of all men, America is a piece of trash! A nation is nothing! A flag is a piece of cloth! I fought Adolf Hitler not because America was great, but because it was fragile! I knew that liberty could be snuffed out here as in Nazi Germany! As a people, we were no different than them! When I returned, I saw that you nearly did turn American into nothing! And the only reason you’re not less then nothing– is that it’s still possible for you to bring freedom back to America!”

All Eyes on the Sumoud Convoy

Eyes on the road people. Eyes on the thousands of people on their way to the Gaza border to break the siege.

SumoudConvoy-tracker

image

We need to show support, as much as we did for the madleen, this is a civilian led movement with over 10,000 volunteers, driving to rafah, where they will be joining 35,000 people to march to the Gaza boarder and demand the entry of humanitarian aid. They have no western news covered so we must keep our eyes on the sumoud convoy. Right now the 8 madleen volunteers still being illegally detained have the eyes of the west on them and even with their European passports rima hasan and Thiago avila are being held in inhuman conditions in solidarity confinent and threatened with physical violence. Even with this happening the freedomflottila volunteers still insist we keep demanding a break to the seige on Gaza.

people all over the world are going to meet the sumoud convoy at the border. Thousands from Europe are taking flights to Egypt, all eyes on the sumoud convoy.

i will never be against piracy ever but i also need physical media to remain

the average blockbuster carried about 3x as many films than that that are streaming on Netflix or any other streaming service, physical media along with piracy is more important than ever.

I thought this wasn’t true, because how could it be true? How could one small store have more movies than an online database? So I googled it.

I am surprised and depressed to learn it’s 100% true, according to google. A Blockbuster store was required to have a minimum of 7000 titles, but most averaged about 10,000. Netflix has 4000 movies. (And 1800 tv shows if you want to count those, but even included, it’s still less)

Now I’m even more depressed about the collapse of physical rental stores.

BONUS: They weren’t beholden to Who Owns What IP Right Now. They got videos from everyone. You didn’t have to pay separately for the rights to rent from the Disney Shelves and the WB Shelves and bler bler bler, and they only STOPPED having those movies when the tapes broke or someone never returned ‘em.

friendly reminder that your local library will have lots of physical media and if they don’t have what you’re looking for you can most likely ask them to purchase it or order it from another library through interlibrary loan

Shoutout to Scarecrow Video- they have over 148,000 titles, most of which you can rent by mail. Rentals have been down in the last few years so they’re asking for support!

boosting this for Scarecrow Video. It’s also now a non-profit.

the start of a comic i was making in 2023 about a mosquitos point of view

Close up drawing of a mosquito on a white shape that is an implied arm. Underneath is text that reads "I know what I ask for is too much."ALT
Close up of a mosquitos proboscis drawing blood. Underneath is text that reads "I know I'm not worthy."ALT
A drawing of a mosquitos life cycle from egg to larva to pupae to adult. Text reads "To think Nectar of the Divine Flows through all of us."ALT
Drawing of a mosquitos drawing blood from a white arm. The shadow of a hand is over it. Text reads "But that does not make us Holy."ALT
The same arm as the last drawing, except the hand that was a shadow has now squished the mosquito.ALT
Drawing of a mosquito flying with text that reads "May I spend my life repenting."ALT
Drawing of a white frog catching the same mosquito with its tongue. Text reads "May I not take it for granted."ALT
Drawing of a white fish eating the white frog from previous drawing. text reads "May I remember you."ALT
Drawing of someone holding the white fish from previous drawing by the mouth as if just caught. Text reads "When I find you again"ALT
Drawing of a cooked whole fish on a plate with a lemon. Text reads "When I may finally return what is yours, when I may finally return your kindness"ALT
Drawing of a person eating a piece of fish on a fork, the fish is colored blood red. Text reads "May our reunion be just as sweet as our parting."ALT

OK i finished it.

Everything has to eat even the humble mosquito 🦟

Its a neutral action to eat and to be eaten.

“Crazy Dion” Diamond at one of his sit-ins as a teenager in Arlington, VA. June 10, 1960

via reddit

All of those people around him are demons

hey guys! here’s some fun things i learned from this article about Dion Diamond:

  • he did these sit-ins by himself. like idk about you, but i always thought of sit-ins as organized by groups, what kind of bravery does it take, man
  • he didn’t tell anyone about it, like he was no glory-seeker about this. his parents didn’t even know until reporters started calling them up like “hey, did you know your son is in jail?
  • when someone called the cops he’d skedaddle out the back door although he was sent to prison multiple times
  • the last time he got arrested was in Baton Rouge, and the cops were so sick of him that they told inmates they’d put in a good word for anyone who gave Diamond a hard time. (the inmates didn’t take the bait.)
  • he’s still alive!

hark, a hero of our times!

That is unbelievable courage!

A fucking nazi in that last shot too. Damn clear that the u.s. always had a nazi problem.

God damn Dion. 🤘
